Torre Middle School is a small school that hosts approximately 700 pupils from 5th to 9th grade and offers some vocational training and some adult general education courses in the evening as well. The school is set in a rather deprived area of Madeira island – socially, economically and culturally – and shows poor academic results. However, academic results always need to be contextualized and these students need a boost of vision to help themselves find their way in or outside their native environment. Because most students are entitled to social support, the school budget can’t afford to offer a technologically modern set of communication gadgets, but that does not hinder teachers’ efforts in projects in many different areas, such as environment and sustainability, arts, sports.
Two of the school priorities are to improve students’ motivation and success and to bridge a strong communication between the school and pupils’ families so as to open mentalities to a more constructive and sustainable way of living. The area surrounding the school is geographically very diverse and appealing to the eye of any tourist for its picturesque views and peculiar fishing boats. Getting to know it, exploring it, protecting it and welcoming its visitors will help to develop a healthier sense of self-esteem in the population, and today’s school has a share of responsibility there.
For this project, there are three teachers in closer contact so as to enable a fluid and secure coordination, and because the students involved will be from different classes, the activities, learnings and teachings will touch a wide range of staff and pupils. For the preparation of this project, we work together in team-work and the contact person meets with the headmaster for further improvement and support.
